Ducks Ltd. é uma banda de Toronto que conta com o guitarrista principal australiano Evan Lewis e o vocalista, baixista e guitarrista rítmico Tom McGreevy, nascido no Reino Unido e criado nos Estados Unidos. Como Ducks Ltd., os dois prosperam ao explorar as fronteiras entre o jangle pop animado e o power pop enérgico. O seu mais recente álbum, “Harm’s Way”, contém canções ansiosas que McGreevy explica como sendo “sobre luta. Sobre assistir pessoas que me importam sofrerem e tentar perceber como estar lá para elas. E sobre a tensão de viver no mundo quando parece que está prestes a colapsar.”

“Harm’s Way” é uma evolução inegável do processo de composição de músicas do Ducks Ltd. Enquanto o seu aclamado álbum de estreia de 2021, “Modern Fiction”, e o EP de 2019, “Get Bleak”, foram auto-gravados e auto-produzidos num porão em Toronto, desta vez, fizeram um LP em Chicago com o produtor Dave Vettraino e alguns dos seus músicos favoritos. Estes colaboradores incluem Macie Stewart dos Finom, Julia Steiner e Marcus Nuccio dos Ratboys, Jason Balla dos Dehd, Margaret McCarthy dos Moontype, Rui De Magalhães dos Lawn, Nathan O’Dell dos Dummy e Lindsey-Paige McCloy dos Patio. O baterista de digressão dos Ducks Ltd., Jonathan Pappo, também aparece no LP.

A banda mostrou pela primeira vez esta inclinação colaborativa num EP de covers de 2023, que contou com participações de Mo Troper, Ratboys, Illuminati Hotties e Jane Inc. e apresentou versões de músicas dos The Cure, The Feelies e The Jesus and Mary Chain. Enquanto essas músicas começaram como ideias em dias de folga da digressão, “Harm’s Way” também é um produto da escrita em viagem enquanto apoiavam atos como Nation of Language e Archers of Loaf. “Quando assinamos contrato, tínhamos feito talvez cinco ou seis concertos”, diz McGreevy. “Depois do ano passado, já são centenas. Essas coisas mudam a tua perceção da tua própria música e composição de músicas.”

Esta confiança conquistada com esforço e testada na estrada tornou a criação deste LP a mais intuitiva e orgânica até agora. “A nossa relação é construída na confiança e não deixamos os nossos egos interferirem no processo criativo de forma alguma”, diz Lewis. “Temos esta coisa realmente boa em que cada decisão com a banda passa pelos dois. Aqui, especialmente, descobrimos realmente como fazer algo que realmente soa como nós.”

Ducks Ltd. are a Toronto band featuring Australian lead guitarist Evan Lewis and U.K-born, U.S.-raised singer, bassist, and rhythm guitarist Tom McGreevy. As Ducks Ltd., the two thrive on skirting the edges of buoyant jangle pop and driving power pop. Their latest album, Harm’s Way, contains anxious songs that McGreevy explains are “about struggling. About watching people I care for suffer, and trying to figure out how to be there for them. And about the strain of living in the world when it feels like it’s ready to collapse.”

Harm’s Way is an undeniable evolution of Ducks Ltd.’s songwriting process. Where their critically acclaimed 2021 debut Modern Fiction and 2019 EP Get Bleak were self-recorded and self-produced in a Toronto basement, here, they made an LP in Chicago with producer Dave Vettraino and some of their favorite musicians. These collaborators include Finom’s Macie Stewart, Ratboys’ Julia Steiner and Marcus Nuccio, Dehd’s Jason Balla, Moontype’s Margaret McCarthy, Lawn’s Rui De Magalhaes, Dummy’s Nathan O’Dell, and Patio’s Lindsey-Paige McCloy. Ducks Ltd.’s touring drummer Jonathan Pappo also appears on the LP.

The band first showed this collaborative streak on a 2023 covers EP, which featured guests like Mo Troper, Ratboys, Illuminati Hotties, and Jane Inc. that boasted renditions of songs by The Cure, The Feelies, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Where those songs started as ideas on days off from tour, Harm’s Way is also a product of writing on the road while supporting acts like Nation of Language and Archers of Loaf. “When we got signed, we had played maybe five or six shows ever,” says McGreevy. “After last year, it’s well in the hundreds. Those things change your perception of your own music and songwriting.”

This well-earned and road-tested confidence made the making of this LP their most intuitive and organic yet. “Our relationship is built on trust and we don’t let our egos come into the creative process in any way,” says Lewis. “We have this really great thing where every decision with the band is filtered through both of us. Here especially, we really figured out how to make something that truly sounds like us.”

Guilherme Machado Correia nunca pretendia que Hause Plants fosse mais do que um veículo para lançar as músicas que tinha escrito e gravado no seu quarto quando lançou o primeiro EP da banda, ‘Film For Color Photos’, em 2021. Avancemos até 2024, e Hause Plants tornou-se uma das bandas mais trabalhadoras a sair de Lisboa, Portugal. Juntamente com os seus amigos de infância Dani Royo, Janny Silva e João Simões, Guilherme transformou Hause Plants numa máquina bem oleada, tendo lançado três EPs em três anos através da editora baseada em Los Angeles, Spirit Goth, e passado a maior parte do tempo em digressão, a abrir para bandas como Ducks Ltd., Dehd, Cola, Kate Davis e The Haunted Youth.

Depois de se destacarem na cena de Lisboa, a banda mudou-se para Williamsburg, Brooklyn, em 2022, para lançar o próximo EP deles, ‘Sleeping With Weird People’. Durante seis meses, foram rapidamente acolhidos pela cena musical de Nova Iorque, fazendo concertos quase todas as semanas.

Em 2023, Hause Plants foram nomeados para os Music Moves Europe Awards, o prémio financiado pela UE que distingue o som europeu do amanhã, que decorreu no Eurosonic Noorderslag, nos Países Baixos. No festival, a banda tocou no lendário local VERA e o seu espetáculo foi considerado um dos cinco melhores do ESNS 2023 pela Clash Magazine.

2024 está a tomar forma como mais um ano ocupado para a banda, com uma digressão europeia já anunciada para janeiro, nova música a caminho e participações confirmadas no SXSW em Austin, Texas, e no New Colossus Festival na cidade de Nova Iorque.

Guilherme Machado Correia never intended for Hause Plants to be anything more than a vehicle for him to release the songs he had written and recorded in his bedroom when he released the band’s first EP, ‘Film For Color Photos’, in 2021. Fast forward to 2024, Hause Plants has become one of the hardest-working bands coming out of Lisbon, Portugal. Joined by his childhood friends Dani Royo, Janny Silva and João Simões, Guilherme has turned Hause Plants into a well-oiled machine, having released three EPs in three years via the Los Angeles-based label Spirit Goth and spent most of their time on tour, opening for the likes of Ducks Ltd., Dehd, Cola, Kate Davis and The Haunted Youth.

After rising to prominence in the Lisbon scene, the band moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2022 to release their next EP, ‘Sleeping With Weird People’. Over six months, they were quickly embraced by the music scene of New York City, playing shows almost every week.

In 2023, Hause Plants were nominated at the Music Moves Europe Awards, the EU-funded prize that distinguishes the European sound of tomorrow, which took place at Eurosonic Noorderslag, in the Netherlands. At the festival, the band played the legendary venue VERA and their show was considered one of the top five of ESNS 2023 by Clash Magazine.

2024 is shaping up to be another busy year for the band, with a European tour already announced for January, new music on the way, and appearances confirmed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and New Colossus Festival in New York City.
