A Zaratan tem o prazer de apresentar “Blindness“, uma exposição pop-up de Katarina Bulanova, que expõe os trabalhos desenvolvidos durante a sua residência em Lisboa. A artista tem vindo a explorar a relação entre terra/território e água/mar através de diferentes suportes, refletindo sobre a ligação cultural e histórica entre os dois elementos.
O título do projeto, „Blindness“, refere-se a um conhecido romance do escritor José Saramago („Ensaio sobre a cegueira“) e aponta para a invisibilidade da catástrofe social e ecológica contemporânea. A narrativa de Saramago deixa claro que a cegueira literal é uma metáfora para expressar uma patologia da consciência que encerra o indivíduo dentro de si e o priva da capacidade de perceber a nossa própria humanidade e a humanidade dos outros: “…atravessaram uma grande praça com grupos de cegos que estavam ouvindo os discursos de outros cegos, à primeira vista, nem um nem o outro grupo parecia cego, os oradores viraram as cabeças excitados para os ouvintes, enquanto os ouvintes viraram as cabeças atentamente para os oradores.”
Os problemas ecológicos atuais, como o aquecimento global e o aumento do nível do mar, são resultado da desigualdade e da opressão social, que está ligada ao passado colonial. A expansão europeia no período moderno foi marcada por uma relação ambígua entre „explorador“ e „explorado“. Hoje em dia a exploração continua, com os olhos narcisicamente fixados na nossa própria imagem refletida no ecrã do telemóvel. Como sair da nossa própria percepção egocêntrica do mundo?
Composta por colagens, vídeos e ações produzidas durante o último mês, a exposição está diretamente ligada à performance ao vivo que será apresentada no dia 26 de janeiro às 18h. As obras de Katarina Balunova são um convite para “permitir-nos re-entender a realidade que nos foge”, como fazem os romances de Saramago. A sua residência na Zaratan é financiada por fundos públicos do Slovak Arts Council. BIO: Katarina Balunova é uma artista interdisciplinar, investigadora e curadora sediada em Bratislava, Eslováquia. A sua prática artística se desenvolve numa ampla gama de médias, como pintura, instalação, performance, vídeo e poesia. Expõe regularmente em exposições em instituições internacionais, entre as quais destacam-se: Ely Center of Contemporary Art (USA), Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (South Korea), Kohta Kunsthalle (Finland, National Art Museum (China), Mark Rothko Art Center (Latvia), Dafen Art Museum (Shenzhen). O seu trabalho explora temas como a utopia e o habitat (urbano), assim como mitologias pessoais e a oscilação entre passado e futuro. Segundo Zygmunt Bauman, as utopias situam-se no espaço de tensão entre a crítica do presente, a procura de soluções para o futuro e as referências ao passado. As utopias podem ser uma busca por uma forma ideal de arquitetura e sociedade, uma memória da infância ou um Jardim do Éden. De fato, o paraíso é uma utopia espiritual, uma miragem da humanidade; é uma idade de ouro passada, mas também a promessa de uma vida futura após a morte, uma esperança eterna. As utopias são inerentemente ambivalentes, e é esse aspecto que mais interessa à artista – a contradição entre a procura da perfeição e a realidade desordenada da natureza e das emoções humanas.

Zaratan is please to present “Blindness“, a pop-up exhibition by Katarina Balunova, who is showing the works developed during her residency in Lisbon- The artist has been exploring the relationship between land / territory and water / sea through different media, reflecting on the cultural and historical link among the two. The title of the project, „Blindness“, refers to a well-known novel by the writer José Saramago and points to the invisibility of contemporary social and ecological catastrophe. Saramago’s narrative makes clear that the literal blindness is a metaphor to express a pathology of consciousness that locks an individual within himself and deprives him of an ability to perceive our own humanity and the humanity of others: “… they crossed a large square with groups of blind people who were listening to speeches from other blind people, at first sight, neither one not the other group seemed blind, the speakers turned their heads excitedly towards their listeners, the listeners turned their head attentively to the speakers.” Current ecological problems such as global warming and sea level rising are the result of social inequality and oppression, which is linked to the colonial past. European expansion overseas in the modern period was marked by an ‘explore-exploit’ relationship. Nowadays the exploitation continues, with our eyes narcissistically fixed on our own image in the phone screen mirrors. When will we be cured of our egocentric perception of the world? Composed of collages, videos and actions produced during the last month, the exhibition is directly linked with the live performance that will be presented on January 26 at 18:00. Katarina Balunova’s artworks are an invitation to “allow us to re-understand the escaping reality”, as Saramago’s novels do. Her residency at Zaratan is supported using public funding by the Slova Arts Council.
BIO: KATARINA BALUNOVA is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and curator based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Her artistic practice develops in a wide range of mediums such as painting, installations, performance, video, and poetry. She has exhibited worldwide including the Ely Center of Contemporary Art USA, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art South Korea, Kohta Kunsthalle Finland, National Art Museum of China, Mark Rothko Art Centre Latvia, Dafen Art Museum Shenzhen, and others. Her work explores themes such as utopia, (urban) habitat, personal mythology, oscillation between the past and the future. According to Zygmunt Bauman, utopias lie in the space of tension between the critique of the present, the search for solutions for the future, and references to the past. Utopias can be a search for an ideal form of architecture and society, a memory of childhood, or a Garden of Eden. Indeed, paradise is a spiritual utopia, a mirage of humanity; it is a bygone golden age, but also the promise of a future life after death, an eternal hope. Utopias are inherently ambivalent, and it is this aspect which most interests the artist – the contradiction between the pursuit of perfection and the untidy reality of human nature and emotions.
