Free Rice – Turkana X Saya X Vampirinho
Turkana was raised in Kakuma, near Lake Turkana in Kenya, before relocating to Uganda. Her upbringing has been marked by perpetual dislocation and rapid, improvised reconstitution, which strongly influences her music. Part of Anti-Mass, a queer collective based in Kampala that aims to create a safe space for marginalised communities, she expresses herself blending dizzying breakdowns with sobering industrial drum patterns, creating a distinct musical experience. Saya is a multi-potential artistic force, musical researcher and anti-racist activist. Born in Santiago de Compostela, with Palestinian roots and currently based in Porto. Her sessions are marked by roots rhythms, with genres ranging from kuduro to arab experimental electronic, gqom, baile & rave funk, deconstructed club, UK bass, latin club or amapiano among others. A journey in which she explores sounds from different regions and gives them the recognition and visibility of the resistances existing in those territories and in the diaspora. Thus, her DJ sets create a caring space and a celebration of dissidence, and she reminds us that the anti-racist fight is also possible through music. Vampirinho aka Van Ayres is a multidisciplinary artist residing in Lisbon, who is characterized by exploring in his creative process some of the most “deconstructed” music in the city, while as Van Ayres, references like footwork, broken beats, in the realm of experimentation can be found. As Vampirinho, he will perform a DJ set, opening the ritual that continues throughout the night. Free Rice is a monthly free access event, focused in club music. *Arroz Estúdios is a non-profit cultural association, a membership is required to enter.
